Red Planet Resorts
Designing a companion app that transforms a ticket into a 26-month interactive journey.
Red Planet Resorts wanted more than a companion app. They needed a digital experience that extends the excitement of purchasing a ticket by immersing travellers in a believable journey to Mars, keeping them engaged with mission updates, progress tracking and interactive content throughout the experience.

Challenge
Purchasing a ticket to Red Planet Resorts was only the beginning of the customer experience. The challenge was to create a companion app that keeps travellers emotionally invested throughout their fictional journey to Mars by transforming mission updates, travel information and scheduled activities into an engaging, story-driven experience that users would continually return to over the course of their mission.

Discovery
Every successful product begins with understanding the user’s journey before designing the interface. Using our Product Discovery framework, we mapped the complete customer experience—from ticket purchase and onboarding through the virtual voyage to Mars—to identify the moments that required excitement, anticipation, reassurance and continued engagement.
Strategic Design Decisions

The Journey Should
Feel Alive

Travellers weren’t simply buying a ticket—they were becoming part of a long-duration mission to Mars. Every interaction needed to reinforce that feeling of progression.
Design Response
Mission progress, travel distance, communication delay, spacecraft location and environmental data were surfaced throughout the experience, making the journey feel active, believable and continuously evolving.
Users Need A Single Mission Control Centre

Customers needed one intuitive place to access every aspect of their journey without navigating through multiple disconnected sections.
Design Response
The Mission Control Hub was designed as the central navigation system, giving travellers immediate access to mission progress, communication metrics, ship tracking, environmental data, schedules and mission updates from a single dashboard.
Every Visit Should Reveal Something New

A companion app only delivers value if users have a reason to return regularly throughout the journey.
Design Response
Mission updates, weekly schedules, historical space events, community content and evolving mission information create fresh experiences that encourage continued engagement over the lifetime of the mission.
Complex Space Data Needed To Feel Understandable

Scientific information such as communication latency, solar activity and spacecraft telemetry could easily overwhelm non-technical users.
Design Response
Complex mission data was translated into visually engaging dashboards using intuitive layouts, clear visual hierarchy and digestible information blocks that make technical information easy to understand without losing authenticity.
The Experience Should Strengthen Emotional Investment

The app needed to reinforce the feeling that travellers were active participants in the mission rather than passive observers.
Design Response
Personalised mission information, captain’s logs, mission stories, community features and interactive content were woven throughout the experience, strengthening emotional connection and making every traveller feel like part of a shared journey.
Outcome
The companion app transforms a one-time ticket purchase into an immersive long-term digital experience. By combining storytelling, mission tracking and personalised updates, the design extends customer engagement well beyond the initial transaction, creating an interactive journey that keeps travellers connected to their Mars adventure from departure to arrival.

Red Planet Resorts
Engineering a companion mobile app for a 26-month interactive journey to Mars.
Following the successful launch of Red Planet Resorts’ web platform, the next challenge was to bring the same immersive experience to Android and iOS. The objective was to engineer a mobile application capable of supporting an evolving mission experience, multiple interactive modules, and a consistent user journey while maintaining performance, scalability, and long-term maintainability.

Challenge
Unlike a conventional mobile application, Red Planet Resorts needed to support an evolving digital experience spanning a fictional 26-month journey to Mars. The application had to bring together multiple interconnected modules—including mission progress, communication metrics, environmental data, schedules, community features and personalised content—while delivering a seamless experience across Android and iOS. The solution also needed to remain scalable as new mission content and functionality were introduced over time.

Technical Understanding
Before development began, we analysed the application’s functional requirements, navigation structure, module dependencies and content flow to establish a clear execution strategy. Understanding how each feature interacted within the broader product ecosystem enabled us to structure development into clearly defined components, reducing implementation ambiguity while creating a scalable foundation for future enhancements. This reflects our approach of creating technical clarity before active development begins.
How We Executed It

Building A Modular
Product Architecture

The application was engineered as a collection of interconnected modules, allowing features such as Mission Dashboard, Mission Control, Ship Tracker, Communication Metrics and Weekly Updates to operate independently while maintaining a consistent user experience. This modular approach supports future expansion without disrupting the existing application.
Delivering A Consistent Cross-Platform Experience

The application was developed to provide a consistent experience across Android and iOS, ensuring navigation patterns, interactions, layouts and performance remained familiar regardless of the device being used.
Structuring Dynamic Mission Information

Mission progress, environmental information, communication delays, schedules and evolving content were organised into reusable interface components capable of presenting changing information in a clear and consistent manner throughout the application.
Optimising Navigation Across Multiple Features

With numerous interconnected mission modules available within the application, navigation was engineered to minimise friction and allow users to move intuitively between features while maintaining awareness of their overall journey.
Engineering For Long-Term Maintainability

The application’s architecture was designed with future growth in mind, allowing additional mission modules, content and functionality to be introduced without requiring fundamental changes to the existing product structure. This supports reliable long-term evolution while keeping ongoing development predictable and manageable.
Outcome
The completed mobile application successfully extended the Red Planet Resorts experience beyond the desktop platform, delivering a scalable and engaging companion app for Android and iOS. By combining structured engineering, modular architecture and consistent cross-platform implementation, the application provides a reliable foundation for an evolving digital product while supporting the long-term vision of the Red Planet Resorts experience.
